During the Group of Seven (G7) summit, leaders expressed their approval of President Donald Trump’s preliminary accord with Iran. The agreement aims to open the Strait of Hormuz and maintain a fragile ceasefire. French President Emmanuel Macron described it as a “very good deal,” emphasizing the essential role it plays in stabilizing affected economies.
Trump celebrated the accord as “historic,” noting the unanimous support from other G7 leaders. U.S. officials provided journalists with the deal’s specifics, which detailed an end to American and United Nations sanctions on Iran if a conclusive agreement on Iran’s nuclear program is achieved.
“I think it’ll be done. They want to sign. They want to get back to a normal life,” Trump stated, highlighting Iran’s eagerness to formalize the agreement.
The G7’s final day began with Trump jokingly asserting his authority, leading to a session focusing on artificial intelligence and economic growth. Discussions included concerns over Chinese market practices negatively impacting domestic industries. Leaders from India, South Korea, Kenya, and Brazil also participated.
Trump attended a dinner at the Palace of Versailles, praising President Macron and his wife Brigitte.
Opening the Strait of Hormuz: A Priority
Reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical point. Trump faces skepticism from some Republicans on whether the agreement will dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities. An international maritime mission, led by France and the U.K., pledged to assist in restoring maritime traffic and verifying the removal of mines in the Strait.
The deal includes halting conflict in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah, a sensitive aspect since Israeli security concerns persist. G7 leaders emphasized support for Lebanon’s “territorial integrity” following recent attacks.
The conflict has resulted in nearly 4,000 Lebanese casualties and over a million displaced since March.
Support for Ukraine and Global Drug Efforts
The G7 leaders reiterated their commitment to aiding Ukraine amidst Russian aggression, including enhancing air defense deliveries and expanding sanctions on Russia.
“They just don’t know how,” Trump remarked regarding his productive talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the war’s resolution.
The leaders agreed to intensify actions against the international drug trade. Trump highlighted ongoing U.S. military operations in Latin America, targeting drug transporters, though legal questions have arisen concerning these actions.
Additionally, the G7 leaders reaffirmed commitments to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling, labeling them as “serious transnational crimes.”
Relations with India
After meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump suggested a trade deal with India is “very close.” Despite recent strains due to Middle Eastern conflicts, Trump praised Modi highly.
“He’s the most beautiful-looking man,” Trump stated, adding Modi is a “very tough negotiator.”
A U.S. military strike had previously resulted in the death of three Indian sailors. Modi stressed the importance of mariner safety.
