In East Rutherford, N.J., Jaxson Dart, the New York Giants quarterback, faced a reaction from teammate Abdul Carter after opting to introduce President Donald Trump at a rally. Carter expressed his disagreement publicly, deeming the matter as ‘bigger than football.’ Referencing Dart’s choice, Carter highlighted his concern, noting that Dart represents not only his own views but also those associated with the Giants.
During a recent offseason workout, Carter said, ‘If he chooses to align himself with a man like President Trump, it’s my responsibility based on what I believe and what I stand on to not only show my teammates that I’m against that — but to show the world.’
Carter voiced his disagreement through social media after seeing a video of Dart with Trump. Although the posts were later removed, Carter confirmed that he spoke with Dart subsequently, reinforcing that their relationship remained amicable.
While Dart did not apologize for attending the Trump rally, he emphasized respecting the office of the president, calling his role in the event a ‘unique opportunity.’ Despite choosing not to mention Trump directly in his statement, Dart stands by his decision.
Carter noted, ‘I don’t want him to say he’s sorry. Stand on what you believe in. But it can’t be a problem when I stand on what I believe in. That’s all that matters to me.’
Coach John Harbaugh and backup quarterback Jameis Winston tried to convey a message of unity amidst political differences. Winston commented on Dart and Carter’s differing backgrounds, underscoring the positive potential of their collaboration. Harbaugh, who supports Trump, remained unconcerned about possible tensions, valuing the team discussions on confronting issues head-on.
Harbaugh stated, ‘I think it’s made us better, honestly. I’m kind of grateful for the opportunity that we had to have the conversation.’
Injuries and Signings:
During practice, receiver/return specialist Gunner Olszewski suffered a noncontact leg injury, leading to his removal from the field. Harbaugh described the incident as disappointing.
Additionally, Arvell Reese became the final member of the Giants’ draft class to sign, finalizing his rookie contract. His entry follows Francis ‘Sisi’ Mauigoa, who signed earlier in the week.
