Gio Reyna’s Goal Celebrates Win and Personal Announcement

U.S. men’s soccer star Gio Reyna not only contributed to the team’s 4-1 victory with a remarkable goal but also shared exciting personal news. Reyna revealed that his wife is expecting a child.

On reaching the 98th minute, Reyna scored a goal using the trivela technique, where players use the outside of the foot. As part of his celebration, he first covered his ears, joined by his teammates.

He then picked up the soccer ball, tucked it under his shirt, and mimicked sucking his thumb. This gesture is commonly used by soccer players to announce a pregnancy in their family.

“My wife’s pregnant,” Reyna shared after the game, reported by The Athletic. “I’ve known for a couple of months now, so I was waiting for the perfect time. And this sort of felt like it.”

His parents, Claudio and Danielle, both former U.S. international players, along with his wife, Chloe, encouraged him to take more shots and be more assertive in play.

The trivela goal marked a strong start for the U.S. in the World Cup. Reyna mentioned that the goal was unplanned; he acted instinctively without overthinking, a natural response in the moment.

“Honestly, when I’m playing, I’m not really thinking. I’m just doing whatever felt natural. I was in a good area, and I got a good pass, and I just saw the angle, far post,” Reyna explained.

U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino enthusiastically celebrated Reyna’s goal from the sidelines, joining him on the field.

Looking ahead, the U.S. team aims to build on this strong performance in their upcoming match against Australia, scheduled for next Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
