Golden State Valkyries Take Lead in WNBA Finals Opener

SAN FRANCISCO – The Golden State Valkyries staged a comeback in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, defeating the Atlanta Dream 68–64 at the Chase Center. The Valkyries overcame a late deficit and now lead the series 1–0.

Atlanta held a three-point advantage with just over three minutes left but failed to score again. Gabby Williams was pivotal for Golden State, finishing with 26 points. Her performance included making six crucial free throws in the final minutes. The Valkyries closed the game on a 7–0 run after trailing by seven earlier in the quarter.

Williams’ outstanding play included making a running layup with 3:22 left, bringing the Valkyries within one point. She later put her team ahead with free throws, securing a narrow win.

Despite Atlanta’s attempts to regain control, their offense faltered. Jordin Canada’s jumper at 4:23 was their last field goal. Atlanta had several chances but missed key shots in the closing moments.

Golden State coach Natalie Nakase said at halftime, “We were sleeping the whole first quarter.”

Golden State’s defense shined when it mattered most. Veronica Burton and Kiah Stokes delivered crucial blocks that helped shift momentum. Stokes ended the game with five blocks. Williams’s consistent offensive push kept Golden State competitive.

The Dream outperformed at the free-throw line, making 18 of 21 attempts versus Golden State’s 11 of 16. However, the Valkyries’ defense and key plays in the final minutes sealed their victory.

Angel Reese began strong for Atlanta, scoring 11 points in the first quarter. Despite her efforts, she was held without a field goal in the second half. She contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds overall.

The atmosphere at Chase Center grew tense as fans expressed displeasure with officiating. Loud chants erupted in response to calls and reviews. A significant moment came when Veronica Burton was hit in the face, but no foul was assessed for a potential hostile act by Rhyne Howard.

While Atlanta led by five heading into the final quarter, they couldn’t maintain their advantage. Atlanta’s Allisha Gray scored 19 points to lead her team, but their offensive struggles in the fourth quarter undermined their lead.

The game highlighted the strengths of both teams’ defenses, but Golden State managed to edge out Atlanta with strategic plays and execution in crucial moments. The Valkyries will look to build on this win in the next game.
