Former Michigan gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon discusses Vice President JD Vance’s visit to Michigan. Her focus is on affordability and the crucial midterm elections. Dixon emphasizes the GOP’s confidence in key races and criticizes Democrats for opposing DHS funding. The visit follows a West Bloomfield synagogue attack, raising concerns about terror links within the state.
During a town hall in Flat Rock, Michigan, Vance fielded questions from voters as the state becomes a battleground in the fight for Senate control in November’s midterms. Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Republican candidate Mike Rogers are vying for the open Senate seat.
Vance on High Gas Prices
The first question to Vance came from a Detroit barber, asking why gas prices remain high compared to Trump’s first term. Vance attributed this to Iran’s attacks on commercial shipping but blamed the Biden administration for offline American refining capacity.
Vance argued that the Trump administration’s use of the Defense Production Act aimed to restore domestic refining capacity, a process he cautioned would take time.
CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil challenged Vance, noting that Trump and Vance have been in office for nearly two years, yet gas prices remain high.
Corruption Allegations Addressed
Dokoupil raised government corruption issues, citing a Fox News poll where 60% of voters expressed concern. Vance denied witnessing corruption from the president or his administration.
Days earlier, Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned amid allegations involving seeking funds from a donor. Vance stated selling White House access would be “disgusting and despicable” and insisted on following the law.
Vance Discusses Immigration Rhetoric
A naturalized U.S. citizen confronted Vance about his immigration rhetoric. Vance acknowledged “imperfect” rhetoric while defending criticism aimed at companies exploiting H-1B visa workers, not immigrants themselves.
Vance expressed concern about the impact of rapid immigration on social cohesion. He shared experiences of language barriers and stressed the need for shared community values.
“Western liberals imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity,” Vance posted on X.
U.S. Military Efforts Against Iran
Vance argued that the U.S. had “in some ways” already won the war with Iran, claiming success in destroying Iran’s nuclear program. He stressed ongoing efforts to secure Tehran’s long-term commitment not to rebuild its nuclear capabilities.
He attributed current gas prices to Iranian disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, stating prices would be triple without U.S. Navy protection.
Response to Synagogue Attack Criticized
A Michigan voter urged Vance to address antisemitism within the GOP. Vance condemned antisemitism and criticized Abdul El-Sayed’s response to the synagogue attack, focusing empathy on victims rather than attackers.
El-Sayed had condemned the attack and later apologized, emphasizing he never intended to justify the violence.
