On May 19, 2026, Google introduced significant changes to its iconic search box, influenced by advancements in artificial intelligence. For 25 years, Google’s search bar was designed for keywords, such as ‘World Cup.’ However, with AI progress, users are now posing longer and more complex queries.
Google announced its plan to change the search box’s dimensions for the first time since 2001. The updated design aims to accommodate even longer questions, allowing users to incorporate photographs and videos in their searches. Additionally, Google’s main search page will feature a chatbot for follow-up questions. Users will benefit from digital assistants, or agents, to automate search tasks. This feature aids individuals, such as those apartment hunting, by notifying them of new listings without visiting real estate sites.
The upgraded search experience will use the new Gemini 3.5 Flash AI model. Google highlighted the model’s improved capabilities in software creation and task automation, operating more efficiently and at a lower cost compared to existing models. According to Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, Gemini’s speed and cost-effectiveness will enable widespread deployment, ultimately enhancing Google’s services.
