Governor Greg Abbott recently addressed the fatal shooting incident involving a Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, by a federal immigration agent in Houston. Abbott, a known supporter of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, stated, “We don’t want to see people shot. Period.”
Investigation into Shooting
Abbott announced that the Texas Rangers will conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Salgado Araujo’s death. This follows criticism directed at the Houston incident, where Salgado Araujo was not the intended target of the ICE operation. Despite his support for enforcing immigration laws, Abbott emphasized that achieving border security should not involve shooting individuals.
The shooting has spurred further public outcry due to another incident in Biddeford, Maine, where Colombian Joan Sebastian DurĂ¡n Guerrero was shot by ICE agents.
Details on Salgado Araujo’s Death
On July 7, Salgado Araujo was traveling to work with three other men when ICE agents intervened. DHS reported that Araujo attempted to evade arrest, rammed an ICE vehicle, and supposedly weaponized his van, leading an ICE officer to fire in self-defense. The shooting lacked body-worn camera evidence, relying on distant footage from local businesses.
Salgado Araujo, a 35-year U.S. resident, was not the intended target, and the three accompanying men were detained. His son Ronaldo expressed the family’s heartbreak, describing Salgado Araujo as a hardworking family man who lived his American dream.
Following this incident, Abbott stated the importance of independent inquiry without challenging immigration law enforcement legitimacy.
Abbott’s Alignment with Trump’s Policies
Abbott has been closely aligned with Trump’s immigration and border security agendas, implementing Operation Lone Star and working with federal deportation strategies. He previously stayed silent regarding the Araujo shooting amid calls for independent investigations from various groups.
Ongoing Inquiries
Alongside the Texas Rangers’ efforts, the Houston Police Department will support federal investigations as needed. Information on the ICE agents involved has not been disclosed yet. This current focus aims to address public concerns around ICE conduct and the use of deadly force.
