Governor’s Efforts to Revitalize Russian Ideals in Vologda

In Vologda, a region in northern Russia, Governor Georgy Y. Filimonov is implementing policies aimed at strengthening what he calls ‘traditional Russian values.’ His actions have turned the area into a prominent example of the Kremlin’s reactionary ideals.

One of his initiatives involves limiting the sale of alcohol to just two hours on weekdays. He has also effectively banned abortions in private clinics. Additionally, he has commissioned statues of historical figures like Stalin and Ivan the Terrible, underscoring a return to past glories.

Public spaces reflect this ideological shift. Buses and Soviet-era airline jets now carry nationalistic slogans, painted in striking ruby red. Filimonov’s efforts seek to establish Vologda as a stronghold of pure ‘Russianness,’ as described by the Kremlin.

In a bold move, Filimonov attempted to name a youth organization after the secret police of medieval czar Ivan the Terrible. His approach combines elements of imperial nostalgia with strict modern social laws. His campaign, which commenced in late 2023, urges citizens to fulfill what he considers their national duty, including increasing birth rates.
