The Recording Academy has announced alterations for the upcoming 69th Grammy Awards, which is set for February 2027. This update includes the introduction of five new award categories, specifically highlighting traditional music.
The newly added categories are:
- Best Asian Pop Music Performance
- Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance
- Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance
- Best Traditional Folk Album
- Best Latin Song
The Grammys are also renaming and revising two existing categories. The Best R&B Performance Category will now be Best R&B Solo Performance, and the Best Folk Album Category is changing to Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Grammys, expressed enthusiasm for 2027, noting the year will reflect the music industry’s growth. He emphasized the contributions of diverse genres and creators influencing modern music. The Recording Academy members advocate for an expansive recognition of today’s dynamic music scene.
2027 is going to be an amazing year for the Grammy Awards, and one that reflects the extraordinary growth we’re seeing across music.
The inclusion of categories such as Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance and Best Traditional Folk Album highlights the academy’s commitment to honoring traditional music genres. These genres are distinctive, separate from their contemporary versions.
In recognition of music globalization, the Grammys are facilitating broader influence beyond Western music. Given the global reach of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean pop culture, the introduction of the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category is timely. This category will emphasize music from Asian countries, featuring languages like K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop.
The recent changes have been well-received by fans, especially the focus on Asian music. The inclusion of such categories is expected to make the upcoming Grammy Awards more dynamic.
The events for the 69th Grammy Awards will begin on July 7 with the online entry period. A 10-day first-round voting period is slated for October, and the nominees will be announced on November 16. The main event will occur on February 7 in Los Angeles.
