The government of Greenland has issued a stern warning to an American oil exploration company, Greenland Energy. Linked to the Donald Trump administration, this firm has attempted to move forward with drilling activities without proper authorization. This situation has sparked renewed tensions surrounding the U.S.’s interest in acquiring Greenland due to its natural resources and strategic value.
Unauthorized Equipment Shipment
Greenland Energy, based in Texas, began shipping drilling equipment to Greenland in late July. This action was taken without the necessary permissions, as stated in a LinkedIn post from one of its partners. The company planned to begin work in the eastern part of the territory. The Greenlandic government has highlighted that any logistics must be approved by the Mineral Resources Authority before proceeding.
The firm’s response to inquiries referred to a letter sent to shareholders on August 6. It indicated that ongoing discussions with Greenlandic authorities were constructive. The company has scaled the project back to one well instead of two, which they described as responsible.
Trump’s Connections
Several key figures tied to Greenland Energy have connections to former President Trump’s administration. SEC filings from May reveal that Kenneth Griffin, a critic of Trump but a past donor to his inaugural committee, purchased a 9.3 percent stake in the firm. Additionally, Carol Craig, linked to Trump’s missile defense plans, joined the company’s board in June.
Chairman Larry Swets has previous business links to individuals associated with significant donations to Trump’s ventures. Furthermore, Dr. Phil McGraw will host a documentary about the Greenland drilling project. Dr. Phil has been involved in Trump’s initiatives before, supporting his policies.
Trump’s Greenland Ambition
Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland dates back to his early presidency. He views control of the territory as crucial for U.S. energy and national security. After initially aggressive remarks, talks about a future deal have taken place, though officials in Greenland and Denmark have consistently rejected the idea of U.S. ownership.
Greenland’s resources remain a focal point, and talks continue to address security concerns without undermining sovereignty.
Exploration and Resources
Greenland Energy looks to explore the Jameson Land Basin, a vast and undrilled area. Despite Greenland halting new exploration licenses in 2021 for environmental reasons, existing licenses like those bought from White Flame Energy allow some projects to proceed.
The firm aims to leverage a pre-existing license by investing $60 million in the venture, focusing on operational and logistical execution.
Future Uncertainties
Greenland Energy expressed confidence in securing necessary approvals but faces delays. Greenland’s Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources has clarified that no drilling permits have been issued yet. The project remains in the exploratory phase, requiring further studies and public consultations before any drilling occurs.
It is doubtful that the company will gain approval to proceed by the end of 2026.
