Democrats in Vermont are preparing for another gubernatorial election against the popular Republican incumbent, Gov. Phil Scott. This marks the sixth attempt by Democrats to unseat Scott, who has consistently maintained strong support in the state.
On Tuesday, economist Amanda Janoo secured the Democratic nomination, defeating Aly Richards, the former CEO of a child advocacy organization. Richards had notable endorsements from former Democratic governors Howard Dean and Madeleine Kunin. Janoo’s victory was reported by the Associated Press.
Gov. Phil Scott, a moderate Republican known for his criticism of former President Donald Trump, smoothly secured the GOP nomination without opposition. Scott is campaigning for his sixth two-year term. If successful, he will surpass Howard Dean to become Vermont’s longest-serving governor. Only Vermont and New Hampshire elect governors every two years in the United States.
In his previous term, Gov. Scott proposed an $8.6 billion budget for fiscal year 2025, advising against raising taxes or fees. He has displayed bipartisan actions, endorsing Nikki Haley in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries and voting for Vice President Kamala Harris over Trump in that year’s general election.
Despite Vermont’s strong Democratic presence, challenging Scott will be difficult. In the 2024 election, he received 73% of the vote, a significant increase from 69% in 2022. Democrats continue to seek ways to defeat him, but his popularity remains a hurdle.
