Group E Insights: Germany, Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador

Group E at the 2026 FIFA World Cup features four-time champions, Germany, alongside Curaçao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador. Alexi Lalas and David Mosse discuss various aspects of this group, including Alexi’s surprising predictions.

Curaçao made history with their goalkeeper’s remarkable performance. Eloy Room achieved an impressive feat by securing the country’s first World Cup point with 15 saves in a 0-0 draw against Ecuador. This puts him just one save shy of Tim Howard’s record of 16 saves set in the 2014 World Cup.

“It’s going to be an insane memory,” said Room. “You don’t think about it when you do it but, of course, it’s something to look back on. As a goalkeeper, this game was almost perfect.”

Room’s saves were crucial, with ten made inside the box. Ecuador dominated with 27 shots compared to Curaçao’s ten. The draw puts both teams in contention for the knockout stage, though Ecuador faces challenges with just one point from their first two matches.

Germany secured victory against Ivory Coast earlier, ensuring their progression in Group E. Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece expressed confidence despite the setback.

“We wanted to win. We didn’t do it. I bear responsibility, but if my team is giving their all, I have no complaints,” Beccacece stated. “We remain united like a family.”

Leandro Bacuna and his Curaçao teammates celebrated their draw, marking a significant achievement.

Upcoming matches will see Ecuador face Germany while Curaçao competes against Ivory Coast. These final matches will determine the group’s standing in the tournament.
