The surprising cost prompted her to express frustration through a TikTok video that quickly amassed over 100,000 views. McMurchy, employed at a Tulsa hospital, argued that the high bills are unsustainable for her family and urged Oklahoma regulators to take action.
The Labor Department reports that electricity prices are increasing more rapidly than the overall cost of living across the U.S. This is especially burdensome during the hot summer months when air conditioning is heavily used. Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO) sought a residential rate increase of about 15% this year but settled on a 1% increase, pending regulatory approval. Despite this, bills are soaring due to extreme heat, exacerbated by climate change caused by fossil fuels.
Disconnection Risks in Oklahoma
In Oklahoma, residents who fall behind on payments face higher risks of power shutoffs. PSO interrupts service at a rate five times the national average, shown in a U.S. Energy Department tally pertaining to 2024. Unlike some states, Oklahoma allows disconnections if the heat index is below 101 degrees, despite efforts to lower this threshold proving fruitless.
Joanne Pearson from Helping Hand Ministry in Tulsa noted the harsh realities for customers facing shutoffs. Her organization assists financially strained individuals to prevent disconnections, using funds from foundations and the First Presbyterian Church. Volunteer John Johnson helps customers like Ashley Fonseca Mejia to manage partial payments to avoid losing power.
Eric Widger, who works in a local factory, shared how his bills doubled, risking a shutoff. Helping Hand Ministry intervenes for about a few dozen customers weekly, but thousands still experience disconnections. Pearson emphasized the difficult choices faced by those in need.
Utility Companies Respond
PSO sent messages to customers explaining the expenses they face. CEO Leigh Anne Strahler highlighted investments in power generation and grid strengthening to handle increased demand and extreme weather. Nationwide, electricity disconnections are a pressing challenge, affecting millions.
Mark Wolfe, an energy assistance director, warned that the situation may worsen with rising electricity prices and intensifying summers, cautioning against further hardships for many households.
