Former Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the prospect of a 2028 presidential campaign during a discussion with NAACP leaders in Detroit. Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Harris emphasized her focus on immediate political priorities, stating, “28 won’t matter if we don’t get through 26.”
During a fireside chat, Harris responded to direct questions about her potential candidacy in 2028. She asserted that she had not yet decided on another presidential bid. Instead, Harris shifted attention to the upcoming midterm elections, highlighting their importance.
I have not decided if I’m going to run again,Harris stated, prioritizing the upcoming electoral contests.
Adding to the conversation, Governor Gavin Newsom recently declared he would not seek presidential candidacy in 2028 if Harris chose to run. This statement further spotlighted Harris’s prevailing position among potential Democratic candidates.
Harris shared her commitment to encouraging voter participation, particularly as the 2026 elections approach. Describing her philosophy, she noted, “When you focus on the thing out there, you trip on the thing over here.” This comment underscored her belief in addressing present challenges before considering future political ambitions.
The discussion was part of her second event in Detroit on Tuesday, moderated by Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony and Rev. Dr. Genetta Y. Hatcher. Prior to discussing her potential 2028 run, Anthony urged attendees to engage in early voting and mail-in voting practices. Harris was also presented with merchandise encouraging voters to “take your souls to the polls.”
Earlier the same day, Harris participated in a roundtable with Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. The discussion focused on Black maternal health and healthcare expenses. Harris criticized former President Donald Trump’s healthcare policies and expressed support for El-Sayed’s Senate bid.
Harris’s remarks and activities convey a focus on the 2026 midterms, leaving open the possibility of a future presidential campaign. Her previous political journey culminated in her role as the Democratic nominee in 2024 before she was defeated by Trump.
