Harry and Meghan’s Return to Britain

Harry and Meghan have once more captured public attention. Over six years after leaving their royal roles and relocating to California, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly planning a move back to Britain. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are set to start school there in September. The couple will reportedly reside privately, remaining apart from royal duties.

This move, while receiving significant media coverage, does not seem entirely unexpected. The couple’s venture in America always carried a contradiction. Their celebrity status relied heavily on their connection to the British monarchy, a link they were distancing themselves from.

The United States has no lack of famous individuals. Reality shows or even the offspring of celebrities can become instant stars. Yet, what America lacks is royalty, which is what made Meghan and Harry particularly noteworthy. Their tie to the British monarchy, a fascination for many Americans, initially proved highly marketable.

Since leaving their royal duties in 2020, they established a media presence, producing podcasts and content, including the Netflix documentary “Harry & Meghan.” This series, focusing on their royal family ties and departure, became Netflix’s most-watched documentary series in its initial days. Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” and their interview with Oprah Winfrey also brought global attention to their experiences.

Their most compelling story in the U.S. remained their British story. As they distanced from active royal life, renewing the appeal of their unique celebrity status became challenging. This difficulty highlighted an underlying truth: their prominence in America depended on their royal connection. As this link weakened, so did their distinctiveness as public figures.

While they could have reinvented themselves, much like many immigrants in the U.S., such transformation requires cultivating an identity more engaging than their past. They struggled with this transition, largely due to a perceived lack of intrinsic interest. Thus, their American journey had a foreseeable conclusion.
