Harvard University’s website offers a resource page for parents containing ‘anti-racism resources.’ This includes books by authors with controversial views on race and discrimination against White people. Among the highlighted books are Ibram X. Kendi’s How To Be An Anti-Racist and Robin DiAngelo’s White Fragility.
Kendi’s work argues that discrimination promoting equity is acceptable. He suggests that addressing past discrimination requires present discrimination. In a 2023 film screening, Kendi discussed how constructions of ‘whiteness’ impact personal identity and hinder connections to humanity.
DiAngelo’s White Fragility posits that racism is a problem created and maintained by White people. She asserts that all White people carry inherent racism, focusing on how it manifests in different situations.
“The only remedy to racist discrimination is antiracist discrimination,” Kendi’s book states.
The site lists other books like Layla Saad’s Me and White Supremacy and Jennifer Harvey’s Raising White Kids. It also includes instructions for introducing anti-racism to young children with Kendi’s Anti-Racist Baby.
Harvard spokesperson clarified the page was created over five years ago and isn’t an official resource from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The resource page is under the ‘Information for Parents’ section.
Former Harvard resident dean Gregory Davis was dismissed this year due to anti-White and anti-police social media posts. His posts supported unrest as a protest form. Davis’s comments, including criticisms of police, were shared on social platforms from 2019 to 2024.
During the 2020 unrest following George Floyd’s death, Davis criticized police and supported civil disturbances as democratic expressions. These posts attracted attention during heightened tensions.
