Left-wing Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has stirred controversy with his remarks about California’s political scene. During a stream, he voiced disappointment as his preferred candidate, Saikat Chakrabarti, failed to advance in the California primary. That election was to fill the vacancy left by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Instead, San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan and California state Sen. Scott Wiener will compete in November, with Wiener currently leading the race with 41% support.
Piker criticized San Francisco for not being as progressive as other cities. He claimed that the liberals in California are pursuing what he termed “gay fascism,” pointing to Wiener’s sexual orientation.
“It’s just rich liberals who want homo-fascism in the country,” Piker remarked during the stream. He elaborated on what he sees as “gay techno-fascism.”
Responding to accusations of homophobia from Twitch users, Piker reiterated his stance, asserting that California’s “wokeness” is limited to LGBTQ and abortion rights. He expressed frustration, claiming that other socioeconomic issues, such as housing affordability and public transit access, receive little attention.
Piker was also critical of Scott Wiener, accusing him of being insincere about his stance on Israel. Piker claimed that Wiener had defended Israel in the past yet recently accused the country of genocide. Piker suggested this switch was merely a tactic to gain support.
Besides supporting Chakrabarti, Piker also hosted California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer and Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman on his stream before the primary. As reported, both candidates were trailing third in their respective races.
