High-Stakes Wisconsin Primary Tests Socialist Surge Against Establishment Democrats

The Democratic primary in Wisconsin presents a significant challenge as establishment candidates face off against DSA-backed Francesca Hong. Former Governor Scott Walker and host Harris Faulkner discuss Hong’s progressive stances and her past posts, such as the contentious ‘cancel Thanksgiving’ comment. They also consider New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s attempts to distance from radical ‘woke’ positions.

Francesca Hong, a socialist candidate, faces criticism for online posts deemed inflammatory. She previously described the U.S. as “an abundance of suffering” but expressed her desire for it to be “a wealth of opportunity.” In a January 2022 post on X, Hong advocated for equal rights for Black and Brown individuals and urged the election of leaders who combat racism.

During a 2026 rally in Milwaukee, Hong, formerly a chef and mother of one, emphasized her aspirations for progressive change. The DSA candidate’s past comments often scrutinize American institutions and history. Notably, Hong’s post suggesting the cancellation of Thanksgiving criticized colonialism and its impacts on indigenous populations.

Hong, who is Korean American, has made past remarks highlighting racial tensions. In a 2019 post, she shared her discomfort in predominantly White spaces. Her comments often reflect broader progressive themes, including calls to reform or abolish police. Following the 2020 Jacob Blake shooting, she criticized police actions and advocated defunding law enforcement.

Hong’s campaign maintains her views on police and prison reform as aspirational goals. Despite acknowledging the governor’s limited power in defunding police, Hong showed a desire to address community concerns. Her past ambition to become a sports journalist led her to share passionate and sometimes controversial opinions online.

Amid scrutiny, Hong stated her commitment to addressing voters’ issues. Her campaign did not comment on the latest revelations. The primary tests whether the socialist surge can overcome establishment Democratic forces in Wisconsin.
