Vozinha, a celebrated 40-year-old goalkeeper known for his outstanding World Cup performance with Cape Verde, has arrived in Santiago, Chile. He joins Colo Colo, Chile’s most successful soccer club, after overcoming several obstacles that delayed his arrival. “I’m very happy to be here and want to thank the fans for their patience,” he stated upon arrival.
Vozinha’s move to Colo Colo was announced on July 24. However, issues with documentation and personal matters caused multiple delays. Supporters expressed concern, but he finally landed at Santiago’s airport to a warm welcome from fans who filled the terminal with flags, banners, and chants.
Vozinha made history during the World Cup by becoming the oldest player to debut for a national team. His impressive saves against giants like Spain contributed to Cape Verde’s memorable performance. He is expected to enhance Colo Colo’s chances in the Chilean league and boost their continental ambitions, including the prestigious Copa Libertadores.
A medical examination is set for Monday before Vozinha officially signs with Colo Colo. The deal will initially last six months, with an option to extend it by another year. Training is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, when the club will also formally present him as their marquee signing.
Vozinha will carry his nickname, meaning “grandma” in Portuguese, on his jersey after the Chilean Football Federation modified its rules. Previously, players were required to display only their surnames. This change highlights Vozinha’s global appeal, which surged after his World Cup stardom.
Having ended his tenure with Chaves in Portugal’s second division, Vozinha attained fame through remarkable saves against renowned teams. His social media following skyrocketed from under 50,000 to over 29.5 million on Instagram.
