Holiday Weekend Violence Leaves Officers Injured and Children Among Victims

A holiday weekend saw violence affecting the New York Police Department (NYPD) and several communities nationwide. Two NYPD officers were injured, and four children were among the victims of a mass shooting at a family barbecue in Brooklyn.

Coney Island Barbecue Shooting

In Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood, a shooting occurred on Saturday night during a family gathering, according to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Eight people were shot, among them four children. A man wearing black and a ski mask approached a courtyard fence and fired several rounds before running away. Police discovered 10 shell casings and a firearm with an extended magazine at the site.

Tisch stated there was no apparent argument or conflict before the shooting began. Authorities are exploring connections to a previous gang-related homicide on the same block earlier that week. Seven of the wounded are expected to recover, while a 21-year-old woman shot in the chest remains in critical condition. The children injured are 6, 7, 12, and 14 years old. No arrests had been made by Sunday morning.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed sorrow, describing the event as “heartbreaking” and declaring there is “no place for this kind of violence” in the city.

Officers Injured in Crown Heights

In another Brooklyn incident, two NYPD officers were hurt early Sunday in Crown Heights. This occurred during a confrontation with an 18-year-old armed suspect, according to police.

Officers on a July 4th violence-reduction duty noticed the suspect holding a gun on surveillance video after 4 a.m. When the suspect approached an unmarked police car, officers attempted to engage. The suspect fired at the car, and three officers returned fire. The suspect was unharmed and taken into custody after a short chase. A 9 mm handgun was seized.

Detective Robert Carroll was bruised when struck in the back of his ballistic vest, and another officer endured minor injuries to his face and shoulder. Both are expected to fully recover.

Additional Shootings in South Carolina, Florida, and Michigan

Other states also experienced violent incidents during holiday gatherings:

  • Hilton Head, South Carolina: Seven people suffered non-life-threatening injuries on Saturday night close to Coligny Beach. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office stated the violence arose from a fight between two groups at a public beach access point around 8:20 p.m. Six individuals were questioned, and multiple weapons were found. The investigation is ongoing.
  • Pensacola, Florida: One person died, and five others were injured in downtown Pensacola early Sunday. The incidents took place shortly before 1:30 a.m. Police made multiple arrests, and the investigation continues.
  • Mount Clemens, Michigan: A block party shooting on Saturday injured five people, including two minors. Macomb County sheriff’s deputies reacted to reports of gunfire near Court and Clemens streets around 11:10 p.m. All victims were hospitalized, and the investigation is active.
