President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dipped to a new record low during his second term, equaling his lowest level as commander in chief. According to a recent poll by Reuters/Ipsos, only 33% of those surveyed approve of Trump’s performance in the White House, down from 35% the previous week. The poll, conducted among 1,166 respondents, shows that 64% disapprove of the president’s job.
Previously, Trump’s approval hit the same low in December 2017 during his first term. Currently, discussions center around the ongoing war in Iran, which began in February and aims to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The struggle for influence over the Strait of Hormuz has added complexity, impacting global oil transportation via the region.
The situation has led to increased gas prices, with the national average rising from under $3 to over $4 per gallon, according to AAA data. At a recent New York rally, Trump defended these higher prices, stating that paying $4 is acceptable, calling his actions justified.
Besides gas prices, inflation has also increased since the war’s onset. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates year-over-year inflation rose from 2.4% in February to 3.4% now.
In response to questions regarding these issues, White House spokesperson Olivia Wales cited Trump’s initiatives, such as historic tax cuts for the middle class, reductions in prescription drug costs, border security, and minimized violent crime rates.
Wales claims these actions have strengthened the U.S. Despite tension, Trump’s administration reportedly does not have a set timeline for concluding the conflict in Iran.
The war and issues of affordability are focal points for Democrats aiming to regain control of the House and Senate in the upcoming November elections.
