Many homeowners with low interest rates are choosing to accelerate their mortgage payments. This strategy contrasts with the financial advice typically given for such situations.
Financial planner Christopher Price suggests, “Financially speaking, if I have a 2.5 percent mortgage, I would rather pay them as slowly and as long as I can.” This advice is based on the principle that low-interest rates offer an opportunity to invest extra funds elsewhere for potentially higher returns.
Despite this, nearly 25% of homeowners are making payments on their mortgages faster than required. However, those who would benefit most from accelerating payments are not the ones frequently doing it.
This information comes from an analysis conducted by Rocket Mortgage, a leading lender. The study reviewed early payments on almost 3 million loans across all 50 states over five years.
