Financially speaking, holding on to a low-interest mortgage seems wise to some experts. Financial planner Christopher Price states, “If I have a 2.5 percent mortgage, I would rather pay them as slowly and as long as I can.” This approach capitalizes on keeping low-cost loans over an extended period, allowing homeowners to allocate resources elsewhere.
However, almost 25% of homeowners are paying their mortgages faster than required. This behavior contradicts the optimal strategy for those with low-interest loans. Individuals who would benefit most from early repayment tend to overlook this approach.
The data comes from Rocket Mortgage, a significant player in the mortgage industry. They analyzed early payment patterns from nearly 3 million loans nationwide over five years. This analysis reveals a paradox in how homeowners manage their mortgage payments, especially those with lower interest rates.
