U.S. Marines received prestigious military honors for their courageous actions during the chaotic August 2021 evacuation at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan Eby, Lance Cpl. Jordan Houston, and Cpl. Michael Gretzon were recognized by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth with Bronze Star and Commendation medals.
Recognition for Heroic Efforts
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth upgraded the valor awards for the three Marines who risked their lives during the deadly Abbey Gate bombing. He stated that their original award submissions had been inappropriately downgraded after one of the darkest days of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Hegseth expressed during a Pentagon ceremony that bureaucratic caution had hindered proper recognition. He emphasized the importance of celebrating the valiant efforts of the Marines who served during these trying times.
Bravery in Action
The upgraded Bronze Star Medals with “V” devices for valor were presented to Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan Eby and Lance Cpl. Jordan Houston, while Cpl. Michael Gretzon received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a “V” device for valor.
Eby, who was a staff sergeant at the time, was responsible for screening evacuees when the suicide bomber struck. Despite the chaos, he took command, rallied the remaining Marines, established security, and aided in evacuating the wounded. Houston, despite being unconscious and injured, provided lifesaving treatment to his fellow Marines. Gretzon managed to apply his own tourniquet after being struck by shrapnel, showing immense determination and bravery.
Honoring the Fallen
The ISIS-K bombing resulted in the loss of 13 American service members during the evacuation operation. The fallen were honored and remembered during the ceremony, emphasizing the collective bravery and sacrifice made by these service members.
“Today our hearts remain anchored to the memory of the 13 warriors who gave their last measure of devotion,” said the ceremony’s chaplain.
Continued Investigation
The War Department’s Afghanistan Withdrawal Special Review Panel is examining the attack and withdrawal. Sean Parnell, chair of the panel, mentioned that investigators have recently recovered classified documents that were previously hidden, suggesting there may be more revelations to come. The department expects a full report by the end of the calendar year.
