Busy Philipps, known for her role in ‘Cougar Town,’ revealed her diagnosis with a rare brain tumor. The news came during an interview with People magazine, where she recounted the moment her doctor informed her about it. Philipps described the shock she felt as her doctor explained the seriousness of her condition.
Distraught after learning about her tumor, Philipps shared the experience, emphasizing the urgency expressed by her physician. The tumor was initially misdiagnosed, but further examination confirmed its presence in her brain. She was advised that surgery was necessary.
Undergoing Surgery and Diagnosis
Philipps underwent surgery at NYU Langone, led by Dr. John Golfinos. The operation, which took place on March 2, lasted five hours, and involved the removal of a 2.6-centimeter mass from her brain. The biopsy identified it as a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare malignant tumor affecting around 1,100 to 1,300 individuals annually in the United States.
Dr. Alexandra Miller, Philipps’s neuro-oncologist, provided insights into the nature of the tumor. Despite being classified as malignant, this type has a relatively favorable prognosis due to its slow growth rather than appearing severely malignant under microscopic examination.
The Role of Early Detection
The tumor was detected after Philipps mentioned her interest in a comprehensive Prenuvo scan to her cousin’s husband, a Los Angeles doctor. Her primary care physician had deemed it unnecessary, but her relative disagreed, advocating for the scan. Following the scan, Philipps received a call about a lesion on her brain, prompting further investigation through an MRI.
Dr. Golfinos emphasized the significance of early detection, which facilitated a smoother surgical process. Had the tumor gone unnoticed, it could have grown significantly, complicating treatment.
Post-Surgery Challenges
About a month into her recovery, further complications arose when Philipps developed an infection around her incision. This warranted additional surgery to address the issue. Despite initial progress, this setback made her feel as though she was starting over.

Amidst these health challenges, Philipps managed to continue her career, acting in the upcoming legal drama ‘Cupertino.’ In the series, she portrays the ex-wife of a tech billionaire backing a new law firm.
