Two House Democrats, Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, recently stirred political controversy by voting alongside Republicans on important procedural measures. Their decision has sparked significant backlash from their party, with accusations of breaching trust and failing to notify Democratic leaders of their intentions.
Golden, considering retirement next year, has a reputation that might not be favorable among Democrats, while Gluesenkamp Perez is campaigning for re-election in a competitive district. Despite the House being in recess until September 14, their votes helped Republicans advance legislation, which could have been unattainable without this bipartisan support.
“Did they give you a heads up that they were going to vote with Republicans on that rule?” asked Kelly Phares of House Minority Whip Katherine Clark. “They did not. They surprised us,” answered Clark.
The critical vote involved a procedural rule needed for House debate. Such rules dictate debate length and amendments. The majority party typically supports these procedural votes alone. However, in this instance, five Republicans opposed, leaving the rule vulnerable without Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez’s backing.
House Democrats publicly condemned this move, issuing joint statements from figures like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and others. They described the situation as a breach of trust and noted that a serious response was necessary.
Golden justified his decision by highlighting its connection to safeguarding the lobster industry vital to his district. He noted that lobster fishing forms the backbone of communities along Maine’s coast.
Internally, Democrats express frustration, pointing fingers at leadership figures like Jeffries and Clark, as well as acknowledging possible faults within the entire leadership team. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy suggested that Jeffries failed to identify and communicate with potential Democratic defectors.
Even though the procedural disagreement poses internal challenges for Democrats, the party cannot ignore Gluesenkamp Perez’s importance in winning critical districts. Her actions might resonate with voters despite creating tension with party leaders.
Jeffries, while cryptic about issuing rebukes, claimed a significant conversation with Gluesenkamp Perez regarding future cooperation. The Democrat emphasized unity as elections approach.
Ultimately, Democrats need Gluesenkamp Perez for electoral success and, specifically, to support a potential Democratic majority led by Jeffries next year. Failure to address party unity might suggest a lack of accountability and strength in leadership.
