House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., expressed his intention to address the actions of two Democratic lawmakers after they supported Republicans in passing a procedural rule. This rule advanced an anti-socialism resolution and other Republican-backed measures. Jeffries discussed this issue on “The Don Lemon Show,” indicating the case would be reviewed by the House Democratic Caucus’ Committee on Caucus Rules for further action.
“We indicated that it was a significant breach that requires a serious response,” Jeffries stated. Representatives Jared Golden, D-Maine, and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., were the Democrats involved, helping secure a narrow 210-208 passage. Notably, this rule included authorization for H.R. 9436, the Northeast Lobstermen Protection Act, significant for Golden’s constituency.
“The Congressman’s vote on the rule was about advancing a critical bill for his district, the Northeast Lobstermen Protection Act,” said Mario Moretto, Communications Director for Golden.
Golden’s bill aims to extend a moratorium on new regulations for the endangered North Atlantic right whale until 2035. These regulations, according to Golden’s office, could severely impact Maine’s lobster industry. With the bill passing 219-196, Golden highlighted its importance for bipartisanship and survival of the industry.
Following their votes, both Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez defended their positions, citing the significance to working waterfronts. Jeffries, however, criticized their move as a breach of trust and asked the caucus rules committee to promptly review the situation.
Gluesenkamp Perez argued for listening to individuals whose livelihoods are tied to these decisions, prioritizing their voices over outdated data from the 1990s.
