House Speaker Mike Johnson and President Donald Trump recently met at the White House as Congress navigates various political challenges. Much of this year’s legislative work has wrapped up. The popular GOP ‘Reconciliation 3.0’ may lose attention. Drama about a government shutdown was settled with a bill funding operations until December 11.
Attendance in the House is an issue. Only 384 members attended a non-controversial vote on Monday, and 388 for another. Numbers may decline further when the House reconvenes mid-September. Some members contemplating early resignation could affect the Republican majority.
This week, Republicans want a vote to get Democrats’ positions on socialism versus democracy. This tactic aims to confront Democrats and use the vote in fall campaign ads. The resolution includes the SAVE America Act, which mandates citizenship proof for voting. Democrats view the Act as voter suppression, thus opposing it.
Additionally, there are potential resolutions to censure or expel problematic House members. Rep. Chuck Edwards and Rep. Cory Mills face censure or expulsion due to misconduct. Rep. Max Miller counters abuse allegations, yet the GOP leadership hesitates to act without an Ethics Committee conclusion.
The current priority for House Republicans is maintaining their majority, possibly by recessing until post-election. This strategy might keep political issues at bay.
