Human Remains Found Near Tucson Spark Speculation but Unrelated to Guthrie Case

On August 18, 2026, human remains were found about 15 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home outside of Tucson, Arizona. This discovery stirred speculation about a possible link to Guthrie, who went missing over six months ago. However, authorities have quickly clarified that there is no evidence connecting the remains to Guthrie’s case.

According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, time-of-death indicators suggest the remains have been in place longer than the duration of Guthrie’s disappearance. Deputies reported responding to the discovery in a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard. “The remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period of time,” stated the department on X, confirming no linkage to the Guthrie investigation.

The discovery gained attention due to public interest in Guthrie’s case. However, in southern Arizona, finds like this are fairly common. The Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office handles approximately 4,500 death investigations annually. The county leads the nation in the number of skeletal remains stored, as part of its efforts through the Indigent Interment Program to connect these remains with relatives or next of kin.

The county’s Chief Medical Examiner, Greg Hess, highlighted that in 2024 the county managed around 600 sets of skeletal remains, based on data from the National Association of Counties. This number is considerably higher than other regions, largely due to unidentified migrants who perish in the extreme conditions of the Sonoran Desert.

“We have more unidentified remains than other places, because of just the nature of the environment,” Hess explained. “It’s really hot and dry and people die outside, and their remains are not protected from the environment. They’ll decompose and become skeletal remains relatively quickly.”

The proximity of the remains to Nancy Guthrie’s home drew online interest. High-profile missing persons cases often amplify interest in otherwise routine discoveries. Nancy Guthrie, 84, is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-host of Today. She went missing from her home on February 1 under suspicious circumstances. Authorities suspect she was forcibly taken, but no arrests have been made, and her current status remains unknown.
