Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham found herself at the center of controversy following her remarks on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports. Her comments have triggered widespread criticism on social media, drawing reactions from fans and sports analysts.
One notable response came from Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve, who sported a shirt saying ‘Trans Kids belong’ during a game against the Fever. This gesture further fueled the ongoing debate around Cunningham’s statements.
Despite the uproar, the WNBA has not taken formal action against Cunningham. However, she has been banned from the independent WNBA subreddit, which operates separately from the league. The subreddit now restricts users from mentioning several variations of her name, such as ‘Cunningham’ or ‘Soph,’ as reported by the New York Post.
A Reddit user, Adventurous_Hope_101, shared messages with the subreddit moderator explaining the reasoning behind the ban. The moderator stated, ‘We filter content based on Sophi because it tends to bring out trolls and people that aren’t fans of the W.’ They advised users who wish to discuss Cunningham freely to seek other forums.
The exchange continued when the user questioned the subreddit’s decision. The moderator responded by threatening a ban, saying, ‘You aren’t even a contributor to this sub, so l suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs. This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this you will be banned.’
Cunningham’s remarks have led to discussions within the WNBA about its transgender eligibility policy. The issue became more pressing after two former NBA male players declared for the 2027 WNBA draft. Recently, the league’s team presidents convened to address this policy.
