Ian Somerhalder has shifted his focus from Hollywood stardom to a commitment to regenerative agriculture, a move that he says changed his life. Known for roles in “Lost” and “The Vampire Diaries,” the 47-year-old actor has largely stepped back from acting to focus on advocating for farming practices that restore ecosystems and improve soil health.
Discovering a New Passion
During an eye-opening trip to Zimbabwe, Somerhalder experienced firsthand how regenerative farming can transform degraded landscapes. This trip, he says, altered his life permanently. He captured footage in Zimbabwe that later became part of the 2020 documentary “Kiss the Ground,” which helped spark a national conversation on the topic.
Family Roots in Farming
Somerhalder comes from a lineage of farmers, with relatives practicing both regenerative and conventional farming. Meeting regenerative agriculture pioneer Allan Savory in Zimbabwe further solidified his passion. He lived amid the wilderness, capturing footage that influenced public perception of regenerative methods.
A Shift in Career
While Somerhalder fondly remembers the camaraderie of acting, he found greater fulfillment in environmental advocacy. He misses the creative community but values the direction his life has taken.
Life on the Farm
Today, Somerhalder dedicates much of his time to the farm he shares with his wife, Nikki Reed. Their lifestyle focuses on nature and sustainability. Somerhalder credits Reed with sharing his passion for the land, enhancing their relationship and family life.
Hope for Future Generations
Looking ahead, Somerhalder remains optimistic about future generations connecting with nature. Despite challenges presented by technology and societal divisions, he believes in a brighter future through regenerative agriculture.
