The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer, urging Texas not to release an El Salvadoran national without notifying the agency. The individual is accused of murder in two separate fatal shootings and is in the country illegally.
Jefferson Adonay Velasquez-Torres, 18, was charged with murder this week for his involvement in an April 27 shooting outside a Houston nightclub. The incident resulted in the death of 27-year-old Noah Ramirez and left two others injured, as reported by FOX 26 Houston.
In addition to the recent charges, Velasquez-Torres was previously charged in June with the murder of Angel Garcia, 17, who was killed during a Houston house party last August. Another suspect, Enrique Aguilar, 19, was also arrested in connection with Garcia’s death.
Velasquez-Torres faces several charges including unlawfully carrying a weapon and aggravated robbery. He entered the U.S. illegally as a minor in 2014 during former President Barack Obama’s administration and was subsequently released into the country.
Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated, “This criminal illegal alien has been charged with two counts of murder after two fatal shootings in Houston.” She criticized the policies of the Obama Administration, asserting that such policies allowed the accused to remain in the U.S.
ICE requested Texas officials not to release Velasquez-Torres from jail without notification, emphasizing the importance of cooperation to ensure public safety. He is currently held in the Harry County Jail with no bond set for charges linked to the second shooting.
