Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has secured the Democratic nomination for reelection in Tuesday’s primary. CBS News reports that Omar captured over 80% of the votes in the 5th Congressional District, which she has represented in the U.S. House since 2018. This district is the most Democratic in Minnesota and the entire nation.
Omar’s opponents included Julie T. Le, Abena McKenzie, Latonya Reeves, and Nate Schluter. Omar emphasizes her commitment to countering President Trump’s immigration policies. She won her last general election by 50 percentage points and the 2024 primary by 13 points. These factors have contributed to her not facing a major primary opponent this year.
In the Republican primary for Omar’s seat, John Nagel is projected to win with 52.1% of the vote. Julie T. Le, a former U.S. attorney, joined the DFL primary race following an incident in a St. Paul federal court during Operation Metro Surge. After being overwhelmed with nearly 90 immigration cases in less than a month, Le, an immigrant, asked the judge to hold her in contempt of court so she could have “a full 24 hours of sleep.” She expressed frustration, saying, “this system sucks, this job sucks.”
Omar remains popular in her district despite being a frequent target of Mr. Trump and his supporters. Criticisms often focus on her citizenship and Somali heritage. Additionally, her finances, along with those of her husband, political consultant Tim Mynett, have come under scrutiny.
Recently, Omar noted a Homeland Security investigator’s presence outside a town hall she attended in Richfield. She stated, “Instead of monitoring the area for those who might wish harm to me and my constituents, Richfield Police were required to devote time to investigating why an HSI agent was outside of a Congressional event in a vehicle with mismatched plates.” Omar found the agent’s presence unsettling and raised concerns about the reasons behind it.
Earlier this year, an incident occurred where a man attempted to spray Omar with a substance identified as apple cider vinegar at a Minneapolis town hall. Following the attack, Omar told WCCO, “I am really OK. What happened to me is not OK, but they picked the wrong person. I am not one to be intimidated.”
