An Illinois mother discovered a touching moment while reviewing footage from her toddler’s baby monitor. The mother, Krista Stolt from the Chicago area, had been sleeping beside her son’s crib, which led to the heartwarming find.
Debate Over Co-Sleeping
Co-sleeping remains a controversial topic among parents. A CDC analysis revealed that 50% of mothers share a bed with their infant. This contradicts recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics, which advises against routine bed-sharing. Despite this, Stolt embraced the idea. However, her child, Easton, preferred sleeping independently.
Stolt tried various methods to encourage Easton to co-sleep. “Ever since he was a newborn, Easton was an independent sleeper,” she told Newsweek. Through night wakings and sleep regressions, she attempted numerous ways to have him sleep together. Nonetheless, Easton slept best in his crib.
The Bond of Co-Sleeping
Supporters of co-sleeping believe it can strengthen the bond between parent and child. It may also aid in making night feedings and comforting easier by maintaining proximity. This allows parents to respond quickly to their child’s needs at night.
Although Easton showed little interest in co-sleeping, he valued having his mother nearby. This became evident to Stolt 18 months ago. When Easton had trouble sleeping, Stolt began sitting on the floor beside his crib. She reassured him that he was safe. This routine became a nightly practice. “We sit on the floor for 10 minutes and then say goodnight,” she shared.
Handling Nightmares
In recent months, Easton experienced nightmares weekly. To comfort him, Stolt would enter and assure him of his safety. She then lay next to him until he fell asleep. “I go in and remind him that he’s safe, and I tell him that I’ll be here until he goes back to sleep,” she said.
Stolt recalled her own childhood comfort. “My mom always let me sleep in bed with her,” she said. Since Easton wouldn’t sleep in bed with her, she aimed to provide the same love she had received.
A Special Moment Captured
One night, Stolt was awakened by Easton’s cries around 3 a.m. He seemed particularly upset. After comforting him, Easton asked her to lie next to his crib. She obliged, assuming he had fallen asleep. Unexpectedly, Easton reached out and touched her arm. She held his hand until he released it.
Once Easton was asleep, Stolt returned to her bed. The event resonated with her, prompting her to check the baby monitor footage. The replay revealed Easton’s delighted expression when he realized his mom was present. “He had this cute little smile on his face and then took a deep breath, almost like a sigh of relief,” Stolt recounted.
Stolt has revisited this video often. Watching him brings tears and a reminder of the significance of these moments. “I often forget that he isn’t trying to give me a hard time—he’s having a hard time,” she explained. Stolt expressed her willingness to endure sleepless nights for her child’s feeling of safety.
Parenting presents many challenges, but Stolt cherishes these moments. “These years are so short, and I know one day I will long for these sleepless nights,” she reflected.
