Ultra-processed foods include items like processed meats, sugary drinks, packaged snacks, and cookies. These foods often contain ingredients not used in home cooking. In the study, ultra-processed foods constituted about 30% of fathers’ calorie intake.

After adjusting for variables such as age and lifestyle factors, researchers identified that higher consumption of ultra-processed foods by fathers correlated with increased birth weight and greater body measures in newborns. These findings challenge the notion that preconception health concerns only mothers.

The research found differing dietary impacts between mothers and fathers on newborn growth. While fathers’ diets were linked to increased birth weight, mothers’ higher intake of ultra-processed foods was associated with lower birth metrics.
