A reported Iranian strike on fuel tanks in Muharraq, Bahrain, on March 12 has led to significant upheaval for U.S. military families. Just before the conflict with Iran escalated in late February, a military spouse and her husband, prepared to return to Bahrain, received unexpected news from the U.S. Navy.
‘A day before we were supposed to leave to be stationed at Bahrain together, we were told we need to go somewhere else for a short period of time, and then here we are five months later,’ she shared, choosing to remain anonymous. Currently, their lives revolve around temporary accommodations, constantly relocating and managing with minimal belongings.
Military personnel on temporary duty status face additional hardships. These families are ineligible for base housing or rent allowances, so they live in uncertainty and frequent relocations. The strategic naval base in Bahrain, hosting the Navy’s 5th Fleet, is a vital hub for U.S. forces; however, its proximity to Iran leaves it vulnerable to attacks.
Due to ongoing threats, the Navy ordered evacuations affecting over 1,500 troops and their families. Admiral Karl Thomas addressed the situation, explaining that returning families to Bahrain wasn’t currently feasible due to heightened tensions.
Families are adapting to new circumstances, often without their belongings. They face financial and logistical challenges, including buying cars and replacing essential items. Some evacuees have taken refuge in areas like Norfolk, Virginia, and Tampa, Florida, home to U.S. Central Command. Here, organizations like Blue Star Families support displaced families, providing food and school supplies to children without their educational records.
The pet relocation crisis adds another layer of complexity. Companies like Jetpet Global, operated by Inge Michiels, facilitate these relocations for military personnel. When flights from Bahrain were canceled, many pets were left behind, cared for by friends or neighbors. Michiels highlighted the substantial costs and bureaucracy involved, urging clients to remain patient amid ongoing attacks.
