Impact of Rising Marijuana Use on Children and Parenting

Marijuana use is becoming increasingly prevalent, resembling alcohol in its ubiquity and consequences. This trend brings significant concerns for children’s well-being. Nearly 70 million people in the U.S. use cannabis each year. Many children are exposed to the intoxicating effects of cannabis in their homes.

A study from the University of California San Diego indicates that around 6 million children live with a parent using cannabis frequently. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reveals that children in such environments are twice as likely to use cannabis.

Data from the National Center for Biotechnology Information shows adult cannabis use has more than doubled in the last two decades, now exceeding 8% of the population. THC levels in cannabis products have soared, with edibles containing up to 10 mg per serving, and concentrates reaching up to 95% THC. In the past, cannabis buds contained only about 1% to 2% THC, compared to today’s 15% to 25%.

The impact on children starts early, even during pregnancy. Fetal exposure to cannabis nearly doubles the risk of premature birth and significantly increases the chance of low birth weight or the need for neonatal care. Alarmingly, over 5% of pregnant women reported using cannabis in the last month, with numbers rising.

Exposure in the womb also heightens the risk of children using THC products during adolescence. Research highlights that a mother’s marijuana use during her child’s early years increases the likelihood of the child starting cannabis use by age 16.

Regular cannabis use affects parenting abilities, leading to emotional instability, increased car accidents, impaired judgment, and mental health challenges. The emotional state of parents directly influences their children’s well-being, causing anxiety and other issues.

To address this issue, looking at historical strategies for managing alcohol addiction can provide guidance. Measures used to handle alcohol addiction can also help parents struggling with cannabis use, aiming to protect their children’s futures.

In “The Angels Among Us,” Bill Wilson’s story is shared. As a co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, Wilson found help through sharing experiences rather than dictating to others. His approach can be adapted for addressing both alcohol and cannabis addictions.
