Republican Candidate Challenges Rep. Ilhan Omar Amid Controversy

In Minneapolis, a Republican candidate, John Nagel, is making waves in his bid to challenge Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. Nagel criticized the progressive congresswoman after her Washington, D.C. home was searched amidst a federal investigation concerning alleged immigration fraud.

Nagel, a former state trooper with 30 years of experience, believes Rep. Omar should clear up any misunderstandings regarding her immigration status. He mentioned that Omar identifies herself as Somali first, American second.

Nagel highlighted issues in Minneapolis, claiming a “terrorist problem” and gun-running operations involving Somali gangs. He called for a task force to combat violence linked to these gangs.

“We have a terrorist problem, as demonstrated at the Mall of America incident,” Nagel stated. He noted the presence of various gangs beyond Somali ones, stressing the need for a comprehensive gang task force.

“We have Somali gangs, Asian gangs, Black gangs, and Latino gangs,” he asserted. “A task force is necessary.”

The FBI thwarted a suspected terror attack at the Mall of America in Bloomington on October 7, 2026. Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, aged 18, was arrested for allegedly planning to commit a violent act. He reportedly pledged loyalty to the al-Shabaab group.

In recent developments, local officials linked Somali gangs to shootings in Minneapolis suburbs. One incident involved shootings during Eden Prairie High School’s homecoming celebrations. Abdirahman Ahmed Jama, aged 18, was arrested, and local authorities suspect gang retaliation motivated a subsequent shooting.

Nagel criticized Omar and the Democratic Party for insufficient action against gang-related violence in the Twin Cities. He recalled when Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher faced backlash for addressing Somali gang violence.

“We’re finally acknowledging the Somali gang problem,” Nagel remarked. “Calling it racist doesn’t hold the same weight anymore.”

Turning to Omar, Nagel acknowledged her right to due process amid allegations of immigration fraud. “She deserves an investigation like anyone else,” he stated. While stressing her innocence until proven guilty, Nagel suggested she take steps to address any public concerns.

“Providing documentation and DNA evidence could clarify misconceptions,” he suggested. “As a public figure, transparency is essential for maintaining trust.”

Nagel believes Omar prioritizes her Somali identity, often criticizing the United States and potentially undermining its interests. “Somalia is her first love,” Nagel opined, asserting that she views America as a mere financial resource.
