Nurses in the United States are integrating artificial intelligence into their daily routines more frequently. A recent survey involving over 2,200 nurses revealed that 44 percent now utilize AI at work. This marks a significant increase from 15 percent last year.
Despite the growing implementation, there is apprehension about the technology’s reliability. More than 80 percent of surveyed nurses expressed concerns about AI’s accuracy, indicating it cannot be trusted without human verification.
The findings highlight an essential tension in the healthcare industry. While AI offers potential benefits in predicting patient risks and managing workloads, the need for validation remains crucial. This concern was exemplified in June 2023 when Bojana Milekic at Mount Sinai hospital pointed out patients flagged as high risk by an AI program.
As the use of AI in nursing continues to grow, healthcare professionals must maintain a balance between embracing innovation and ensuring patient safety.
