The Indiana Fever, a well-known team in the WNBA, are currently facing new attention following accusations from former player Brianna Turner. Turner, who played for the Fever in 2025 and now represents the Las Vegas Aces, alleged that the organization fired a male staff member over sexual harassment complaints during her tenure with the team. Her remarks came after fellow player Sophie Cunningham made comments on trans athletes.
Turner took to social media platform X to voice her claims. This response followed Cunningham’s defense of maintaining women’s sports for biological females during an interview with ESPN. Cunningham expressed her desire to safeguard young female athletes from competing against biological males.
Turner criticized Cunningham’s stance. She argued that issues within organizations like the Fever pose a more significant threat to women’s sports than trans athletes do. According to Turner, the Fever dismissed a male employee after allegations surfaced, but instructed team players to remain silent about the event publicly.
She passionately defended the inclusion of transgender athletes, highlighting the experience of Layshia Clarendon, a former WNBA player born female who later identified as transgender. Turner noted that Clarendon, the only out trans player in the league, did not cause any issues and contrasted this with the alleged behavior of the dismissed staff member. She pointed out ongoing issues such as sexism, misogyny, homophobia, and racism within sports organizations.
The Indiana Fever released an official statement addressing Turner’s allegations. The statement emphasized the organization’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and professional work environment. The Fever assured that they take any concerns seriously and act decisively to ensure all members of their organization are treated with fairness and respect. However, they stated that they do not comment on personnel matters regarding former employees.
The situation raises questions about whether the WNBA will investigate Turner’s claims. As of the latest update, the league had not announced any plans for an investigation or issued a public statement.
