Oprah Winfrey’s 2021 interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has come under renewed scrutiny. A fresh debate has emerged online due to her explanation of a crucial question she asked during the interview.
In a recent conversation with Vanity Fair, Winfrey revisited the moment when she queried Meghan about whether she had been “silent or silenced.” She explained the purpose behind her question, aiming to clarify whether Meghan was prevented from speaking by others.
I wanted to be clear, was she silenced? Were people telling her not to talk? I said it for clarification so later I didn’t hear, ‘Well, no, it wasn’t that. It really was that I was silenced. They wouldn’t let me talk.’ So it was all for clarification.
During the original interview, Meghan responded by emphasizing her independence and advocacy for women’s rights, highlighting the irony of being silent during her time as a royal.
I’ve always valued independence and I’ve always been outspoken, especially about women’s rights. I mean, that’s the sad irony of the last four years is I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice. And then, I was silent.
Winfrey asked the question that quickly gained viral attention: “Were you silent or were you silenced?” Meghan replied, “The latter.”
Winfrey also disclosed that Harry and Meghan were unaware of the questions before the interview.
They didn’t know obviously anything that I was going to ask them, but I had said to them ahead of time, ‘I’m going to try to cover everything.’
The CBS special, lasting over three hours, became a significant celebrity interview. Harry and Meghan discussed topics like stepping away from their royal duties, lack of support from the royal family, mental health struggles, and concerns about their son Archie’s future and security. I need to do this for my family. This is not a surprise to anybody. It’s really sad that it’s got to this point, but I’ve got to do something for my own mental health, for my wife’s, and for Archie’s as well, because I could see where this was headed.
