Law enforcement is investigating the source of the drugs that led to the fatal overdose of Persley Gerber, son of Cindy Crawford, in Santa Monica. Gerber, aged 27, passed away at a luxury rehabilitation center last Sunday.
The Investigation
The Santa Monica Police Department reported no signs of foul play at the moment. They are looking into Gerber’s suspected overdose. As stated by sources, the inquiry is at an early stage. An autopsy was conducted by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, though the cause of death is deferred pending toxicology results. This process may take several weeks or even months.
The Rehab Center
Gerber checked into the Resolution Living facility in Santa Monica just before his death. Described as a ‘Mental Health Recovery Residence’ by their website, Resolution Living offers programs including partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care for issues like depression, trauma, and addiction. They also provide dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring disorders.
Police responded to reports of cardiac arrest and overdose at the center. Officers reached the $7.7-million mansion around 9:35 a.m. on Sunday. The facility did not respond to requests for comment.
What’s Next
Tracing drug suppliers has become a common practice in overdose investigations. Recently, officials confirmed actress Hayden Panettiere’s death from fentanyl and other drugs, including an unauthorized Xanax variant. Authorities in Los Angeles are probing whether nonprescription pills were involved in her death. The probe into Matthew Perry’s passing led to charges against five individuals for distributing ketamine.
The Santa Monica investigation regarding Gerber remains largely undisclosed. Attorney Brian Claypool emphasized the importance of autopsy and toxicology outcomes for potential legal implications. Attorney Glen Jonas noted that the rehab center might come under scrutiny depending on police findings. Authorities will likely examine staffing and emergency response protocols.
Instances of drugs entering rehab facilities have occurred previously. A family in Riverside filed a lawsuit against a sober living center following a death by overdose. Moreover, Edwin Oliva was sentenced in 2022 for provision of lethal fentanyl, resulting in a fatality due to an unsanctioned overdose.
