Investigative Series: Alleged Influence Networks Built by Communist Party of Cuba

This article explores allegations surrounding the Communist Party of Cuba and its efforts to build influence networks internationally through various organizations and campaigns. The investigation focuses on the activities involving known figures and organizations on behalf of Cuba’s government.

Sanctions and Activist Responses

Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. increased sanctions against Cuba, prompting various activist groups and individuals like Twitch streamer Hasan Piker to take action. Piker reached out to his acquaintance, David Adler, for guidance on what to do in response to these sanctions.

Piker worked with Adler to organize a transnational convoy labeled ‘Nuestra América Convoy,’ which delivered about 40 tons of supplies to Cuba. This initiative involved hundreds of activists, journalists, and organizers from numerous countries. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control is now investigating Piker and others involved, seeking records related to their travels, communications, and activities in Cuba.

Progressive International’s Influencing Role

An important entity in this network is Progressive International, led by David Adler, who played a significant role in the mission. The organization purportedly legitimizes authoritarian regimes like Cuba’s through advocacy under the banner of progressive values.

Gelet Martinez Fragela, a Cuban American journalist, argues that Progressive International helps the Cuban government embed itself within illicit international networks, maintaining influence despite existing sanctions.

Network of Solidarity Campaigns

Progressive International is among 145 entities identified as aiding Cuba’s government. Founded with input from figures like Bernie Sanders and Yanis Varoufakis, the organization operates globally, mobilizing support for Cuba and coordinating high-profile trips, including the convoy.

Adler directs a related nonprofit, Progressive International Exchange Inc., although its financial scale is minor compared to the extensive activities coordinated by Progressive International based in Greece.

Connections and Influence Efforts

The organization’s advisory council includes influential Cuban political figures, further indicating its ties to Cuba. Adler’s previous activities, such as being detained while attempting to challenge Israel’s blockade on Gaza, highlight his involvement in international solidarity movements.

In Cuba, Progressive International’s delegates, including activists and politicians, were seen in high-profile settings alongside Cuban leaders, emphasizing its capacity to operate effectively within this network.

Implications and Federal Investigations

U.S. federal investigators are probing the convoy for potential illicit connections between organized efforts from Progressive International, CodePink, and other related entities. The investigation focuses on verifying adherence to authorized procedures and examining interactions with Cuban government entities.

These activities have long historic roots, with similar solidarity operations established through networks connected to Cuba’s government, seeking to ensure continued support for the Communist Party.

Adler’s role symbolizes the ongoing efforts by activist groups to sustain political advocacy for Cuba. Despite political backlash, these groups continue pushing against U.S. sanctions and supporting Cuba through well-coordinated international campaigns.
