Israel Expands Offensive in Lebanon as Tensions Rise

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israeli ground forces have advanced beyond Lebanon’s Litani River, escalating the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah. This move takes place amid ongoing skirmishes that have undermined a cease-fire agreement in place for the past month.

During a visit near the Lebanese border, Mr. Netanyahu confirmed the military’s deeper push into Lebanon. The Litani River, a traditional boundary in cease-fire talks, has long served as a demarcation line in southern Lebanon. Israeli airstrikes continue to target the region, prompting evacuation warnings for southern Lebanese communities. Lebanon’s health ministry reports over 3,300 casualties since the renewed conflict began in early March.

The conflict’s expansion coincides with planned U.S.-mediated talks at the Pentagon involving military officials from both Lebanon and Israel. These discussions aim to stabilize the border and halt hostilities. Political negotiations are set to follow in the coming week. For Israeli troops, crossing the Litani River marks an operational shift beyond what Israel considers its ‘forward defense line,’ an area situated miles inside Lebanon since March.

The river’s course is primarily 15 to 20 miles north of Israel, yet it nears the border in the east, where recent clashes have been reported. Israel has crossed the Litani in previous conflicts with Hezbollah, including earlier in this standoff.

Under growing pressure from Israeli hard-liners, Mr. Netanyahu has intensified military actions against Hezbollah, including a strike near Beirut—the first in nearly a month. Israeli forces face frequent drone attacks from Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Mr. Netanyahu must demonstrate to northern Israeli communities, affected by Hezbollah rocket attacks, that his government is restoring security.

The Pentagon talks are set to focus on Hezbollah’s disarmament, a crucial demand for Israel in any negotiation. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, in a conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stated that a cease-fire is the essential first step for advancing talks.

Simultaneously, Israel’s operations in Lebanon occur amidst sensitive negotiations between Washington and Tehran to resolve the broader regional conflict. Iran’s conditions for an agreement require an end to Israeli strikes on Hezbollah, positioning Lebanon as a key area of tension in these discussions.

Israeli military chief, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, reinforced Mr. Netanyahu’s stance, affirming that Israeli forces are expanding operations and will continue to target Hezbollah where possible.

The situation remains precarious as efforts to achieve peace face significant challenges. The involvement of international actors highlights the conflict’s complexity and the high stakes for regional stability.
