Israel’s Rejection of the Peace Plan
Israel has firmly rejected the 15-point plan for Gaza proposed by President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced during a Cabinet meeting that Israel would not accept the plan as outlined. The plan includes a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, along with the disarmament of Hamas.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israeli forces would remain until Hamas fully disarms. Despite Hamas’s statement last month indicating its willingness to disarm only after Israel completely withdraws and halts all hostilities, the tension between the two parties remains high.
Increasing Tensions Between the U.S. and Iran
A growing discord exists between the White House and Israel’s leadership, particularly concerning Iran. Amid hopes that Oman could facilitate easing tensions, Iran has set forth strict conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that no negotiations are currently taking place between Tehran and Washington.
Top Iranian security official Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr outlined conditions for reopening the strait. Iran demands the U.S. withdraw its naval blockade, pay war damages, unfreeze assets, lift sanctions, and permanently end conflicts with Iran and its allies. The U.S. has yet to address the list of conditions publicly.
Todd Blanche Confirmed as U.S. Attorney General
Todd Blanche received confirmation as the U.S. attorney general, following a mostly party-line vote in the Senate. After initial doubts, a vote confirmed him at 50-49, with Republican senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski opposing.
Blanche, previously Trump’s personal attorney, received backing following reassurances, such as rescinding the $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund. These assurances brought support from key Republican senators.
