Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont is urging Democratic leaders to eliminate super PAC involvement in party primaries. According to him, wealthy external groups have excessive influence over nominations.
On social media, Sanders criticized the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) for their spending in Democratic primaries. He stated that groups like AIPAC spend millions during primaries, only to support Republican candidates in general elections.
“It is absurd,” Sanders wrote, “the Democrats allow super PACs like AIPAC to use their resources in our primaries, influencing outcomes, then backing Republicans if their chosen Democrat does not succeed.”
Along with this statement, Sanders posted a letter addressed to Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin. In the letter, he highlighted AIPAC’s significant spending in Michigan’s Democratic primary against Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and their planned financial support for Republican Mike Rogers in the general election.
AIPAC is linked with the United Democracy Project, a super PAC aiming to challenge both Republican and Democrat detractors of the U.S.-Israel relationship.
While focusing on AIPAC, Sanders also criticized the broader issue of outside spending. He mentioned that corporate super PACs, including those related to crypto, AI, and online betting, have already set a new spending record of $517 million this election cycle.
Sanders’ concerns extend beyond the financial magnitude, targeting the strategic influence attempts by these groups. He argued that billionaire-funded super PACs with no vested interest in Democratic wins are undermining the party’s integrity.
The AIPAC website claims to support pro-Israel candidates from both parties. It positions itself as a grassroots membership organization, funded by individual American citizens passionate about the U.S.-Israel relationship.
In response to these issues, Sanders called for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and push for public financing of elections. He urged the Democratic Party to use its power to prohibit super PACs in primaries to maintain fairness.
Sanders and Representative Summer Lee recently introduced the Abolish Super PACs Act. Their proposal aims to cap individual contributions to super PACs at $5,000, effectively eliminating them.
Despite Sanders’ persistent advocacy, AIPAC, Schumer, Martin, Jeffries, and Rogers have not publicly commented. Sanders’ appeal emphasizes the need for Democratic unity against external financial influences in primary elections.
