The Israeli military has announced the capture of a strategic hilltop in southern Lebanon, marked by the Crusader castle of Beaufort. This marks one of the most extensive Israeli invasions in the country in decades. The move brings back memories of the prolonged and intense battles during Israel’s nearly two-decade occupation of southern Lebanon, which ended in 2000 following a robust insurgency by Hezbollah, a militant group supported by Iran.
The response from Hezbollah and the Lebanese government to the recent military action remains pending. Meanwhile, tensions escalate as Hezbollah engages in guerrilla warfare against the Israeli forces entering Lebanon. Israeli leaders are contemplating the re-establishment of a long-term security zone within Lebanon to counteract attacks from Hezbollah.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, described the capture of Beaufort as a significant achievement and pledged that Israeli forces would maintain their advancement in Lebanon. However, military analysts suggest that these actions may not deter Hezbollah from launching rockets and drones against both the Israeli forces and urban areas in Israel.
Haim Har-Zahav, an Israeli writer and veteran of the previous occupation, suggests the takeover of Beaufort could signal a relapse into a similar occupation scenario and attritional conflict with Hezbollah. Many Israelis, including Har-Zahav, view returning to such a situation as strategically unfavorable.
