Israel’s New Military Base in the West Bank Sparks Controversy

In a significant move, Israel has initiated the construction of a military base in a region of the West Bank previously under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority through the Oslo Accords signed in the 1990s. This development marks the first occurrence of such an action since the signing.

The Israeli military justifies the establishment of the base as a measure to prevent Jenin, a city once known for Palestinian militant activity, from reclaiming its former status. This area has been under Israeli control since January of the previous year.

However, critics argue that the new base might facilitate the expansion of Israeli settlements near densely populated Palestinian areas. Such settlements are largely considered illegal by the international community and are reportedly expanding at an unprecedented rate.

They’re blowing up the Oslo accords, stated Kamal Abu al-Rub, the Palestinian Authority governor of Jenin. They’re acting as if there are no agreements between us.

The construction is taking place on confiscated land close to the urban area known as Jenin camp. The Israeli military had previously invaded this area in January 2025, displacing over 10,000 Palestinians in what became one of the most substantial movements of Palestinians since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

The Israeli operation was a reaction to the inability of the Palestinian Authority to control militant groups in Jenin. These groups, some linked with Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, had attacked Israelis and challenged the authority’s governance.
