Istanbul has emerged as a vibrant hub for tango, earning recognition from tango enthusiasts and Argentine maestros worldwide. The city’s plethora of tango schools, clubs, and skilled dancers have elevated its reputation as a global tango destination.
This month, tango dancers gathered at the Istanbul Modern art museum for a milonga, a social dance event, showcasing the city’s burgeoning tango culture. Among them were Ozan and Tugce Buyukakincioglu, Turkish dancers who captivated audiences during their performance at an international dance competition in an Istanbul music hall.
Dancers faced each other, eyes locked, embodying the nostalgic passion of a classic tango ballad. Ozan, donned in a double-breasted suit, stood firm like a soldier. Tugce, adorned in a sequined gown, draped her arm behind his neck as he placed his hand on her back, stepping in sync across the floor.
Couples similarly attired embraced, glided, and spun, aiming to catch the attention of the judges and to highlight the dynamism of Istanbul’s tango scene. The city, renowned for its scenic waterways and historic architecture, now attracts dance aficionados who appreciate the richness of its tango culture.
These dance events, including the finals of the La Turca Tango Marathon and Championship, reflect the city’s growing status as a tango capital. Participants and spectators alike are drawn to the allure of tango in Istanbul.
