Italian Prime Minister Condemns Violent Protests in Milan

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed strong disapproval of individuals she labeled as “hooligans” who took advantage of demonstrations in Milan to cause disorder. The clashes occurred in the historic city center, leading to significant disruption.

Meloni stated, “Demonstrating is a right. Setting our cities ablaze is not,” through social media, criticizing the assaults on police and the resulting damage to the city.

The chaos followed a march against wars and escalating living costs held on Saturday. The situation deteriorated as masked demonstrators began hurling objects at police and igniting fires. The disturbances were concentrated in Piazza del Duomo, a square located in front of Milan’s renowned Gothic cathedral, and the nearby Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This shopping arcade is noted for its luxury stores.

Milan’s center-left Mayor Giuseppe Sala acknowledged that the protesters’ concerns were valid. However, he emphasized that violence towards law enforcement and damage to the city were unacceptable.

This story is evolving and will receive updates as more information becomes available.
